The Renovate Mental Health Ward 2F project in Augusta is moving right along.  This project involved a large amount of demolition which is always a challenge in an operational medical center.  Our Superintendent tackled this with our own labor and got the job done!

We look forward to presenting the VA with a top notch space when this job is complete.

These meetings are beneficial to all who attend and it’s always nice to see those staff members who don’t work close by.  Just another way that Harbor promotes a team/family mentality within the company!

We support organizations that help our Veterans and we do our best to pay it forward to the men and women who have made great sacrifices for our country.

One of the organizations we proudly support is the Tri County Veterans Support Network. Founder Tim Taylor reached out to us just before the holidays and we were glad to assist. Tim sent us the following email today to let us know where our contributions went. We are so proud that our efforts benefitted our local Veterans in need and helped make their holidays a little brighter. We encourage everyone to support our Veterans and give back to those who have given so much for us.

Harbor Services News

2015 has been a successful year at Harbor Services.  We are wrapping up some important projects and we have several new projects that will be kicking off in 2016.  Take a look at what’s “Happening at Harbor”:

Renovate Front Lobby – Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, Charleston, SC

This project consists of renovating the existing lobby and a new 4600 square foot addition that will tie into the existing lobby.  This addition will include a vestibule, coffee shop and wheelchair storage area.  This project will also modify the existing façade under the existing porte-cochere.  Harbor is very excited to get started on this project and help beautify the main point of entrance at the Charleston VA.

Expand & Renovate Emergency Department – Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, Charleston, SC

This multiple phase project will renovate and realign specific existing spaces and points of service within the emergency department (ED) so that emergency service for emergency trauma patients can be processed efficiently and treated effectively. The existing interior areas are comprised of approximately 4,700 square feet and work shall include thickening of existing suite interior boundary walls to create a separate fire zone for the emergency department. The existing emergency department services will remain in service during all phases of construction.

Inpatient Psychiatry & Substance Abuse Project – WJB Dorn VA Medical Center, Columbia, SC

The Inpatient Psychiatry & Substance Abuse project includes the total renovation of the west wing and part of the north wing of the third floor of the main tower, Building 100, to become an Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. This unit will be able to accommodate 20 patients and associated support spaces. It is anticipated that the renovation area will be approximately 18,000 sf. The project will involve a total renovation, to include  project design, demolition in a medical facility environment, mechanical upgrades, partition wall installation, abuse resistant construction, security equipment installation, medical equipment installation, and interior finish installation.  Some of the specialized features of this project include a  luminous sky-image ceiling and fixtures specific to psychiatry units much like those used in the Mental Health renovation project we completed in Fayetteville, NC.

As we finish up our multi year IDIQ project at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical center in Charleston, we’ll be completing a new Police Dispatch area with a custom designed and fabricated console;  a halls and walls renovation; and the painting of certain rooms and alcoves.  We’re proud to be a part of the improvements going on at the Charleston VA  and all of the VA facilities we are working in.  We look forward to providing our Veterans with new, up to date spaces that they can enjoy for many years to come.

As we conclude 2015 and look to 2016, we would like to thank our associates, VA staff, subcontractors, and all who have been a part of our success this year.  We welcome new subcontractors to contact us and be a part of what’s “Happening at Harbor” in the future!

Women’s Center Expands Health Care at Memphis VA

By Michael Waddell

The Memphis VA Medical Center at 1030 Jefferson Ave. recently held an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony to announce the opening of its new $5.3 million Women’s Center, which should help to meet increased demand for services for returning female military personnel.

Overall, the number of women in the military continues to grow, reaching nearly 10 percent this year. The number of women veterans receiving health care at the Memphis VA has risen to more than 5,000 last year from 3,500 in 2007.

“As opportunities increase for women in the military, we do expect to see a further influx of women patients,” said Kaye Borgognoni, program manager for the VA Medical Center, Department of Veterans Affairs.

The renovation and expansion of the Women’s Center doubles its space from approximately 5,000 square feet to 10,000 square feet.

South Carolina-based Harbor Services handled the construction duties, which started in 2011 according to Leland Fong, VA Medical Center primary engineer on the project that had some difficulties to overcome.

“When renovating an existing building, you are always running into challenges and some unknowns,” Fong said.

The new center has nearly tripled the number of exam rooms from its previous space of two years ago, growing from only eight exam rooms to 22, and all rooms feature new handicap-accessible equipment and electronic tables.

Also new are two procedure rooms that can be used for things like gynecological exams.

“One of the number one things we see is back pain,” Borgognoni said. “The military just issued new equipment for women in the military because what they had been carrying was made for men. So we hope we will see less back pain issues in the future.”

Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder are also common diagnosis seen at the Women’s Center.

“This is the first year that we’ve had a women’s psychologist (Dr. Kristen Caldwell) dedicated just to the Women’s Clinic, so that’s going to allow us to offer more group and one-on-one sessions from a psychological standpoint for our female veterans,” said Borgognoni, who pointed out that all of the women’s staff of 20 are female. “We offer comprehensive women’s health care, so we one provider for patients that can do everything from monitoring blood pressure to gynecological exams. It is one-stop shopping.”

Among the many services available specifically to accommodate women’s care, the center has modern, high-tech equipment, accommodations to meet the needs of families, including play areas for children.

“Our providers are women’s health providers that are caring, interested and trained specifically for women’s health care. Our nurses are trained for women’s health, and a few have been with us since we opened. They do not rotate through the rest of the hospital,” Borgognoni said.

The newly designed facility has room available for future expansion. The hospital is currently looking for another women’s health care provider, as an opening just became available.

Borgognoni expects the new center to see about 40 patients per day, and she expects that number to increase as more women return from recent service in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“Most of the females who are coming back are of child-bearing age, so that’s something the VA has been looking at,” she said. “We have all of the services that a woman of child-bearing age would need, and we are prepared.”

A new private entrance helps meet another need at the facility: increased privacy and security.

“The VA is generally thought of as a male-dominated facility, so we want to make sure that women veterans want to use the VA for their care and feel comfortable and safe,” Borgognoni said.

In anticipation of the increased number of women entering the military, in 2009 Congress initiated a bill to expand and improve health care services available to women veterans.

CHARLESTON IDIQ – RALPH H. JOHNSON VA MEDICAL CENTER, CHARLESTON, SC

Harbor Services is continuing to perform great work for our Veterans at the Charleston VAMC as we just completed the Women’s restroom renovation at the front lobby.  The new space is filled with elegant touches including tiled walls, cherry wood stall doors, and quartz countertop with under mount sinks.  Fully enclosed toilet rooms give the patients and visitors added privacy.  ADA access was also improved to increase accessibility for everyone.  This project will continue with the renovation of the Family and Men’s restrooms, and First Floor Waiting area.

Upcoming projects include the main stairwell paint and flooring, electrical vault renovation to make workroom, Clinical Access Coordinator extension, and a number of others to make significant improvements to the Charleston VAMC.

MENTAL HEALTH PROJECT – FAYETTEVILLE VA MEDICAL CENTER, FAYETTEVILLE, NC

The 5th Floor Mental Health Project at the Fayetteville VAMC is near completion.  This extensive renovation of the 5th floor created a Mental Health Ward to meet the requirements of the most recent Mental Health Guidelines.  There are many unique aspects to this project including solid surface walls in the patient showers and restrooms, personal access control system, wicket doors with anti ligature sensors, impact resistant walls throughout, and all the necessary items for a Mental Health Facility.

RENOVATE WOMEN’S COMPREHENSIVE HEALTHCARE – MEMPHIS VA MEDICAL CENTER, MEMPHIS, TN

We are also working at the Memphis VAMC.  The Women’s Comprehensive Healthcare Project is progressing as expected on the second and final phase.  The new elevator shaft has been constructed and the exterior wall panels and Glazing are being installed.  This phase of the project encompassed two floors of the Medical Center and will be a great improvement considering the interior and exterior finishes.  We look forward to seeing the final product blending the sitework such as plantings, landscape, sidewalk with the building exterior wall panels and custom linear glass accents.  This will be a great facility for the Veterans.

Harbor's very capable staff has met condensed schedules and provided unmatched quality on every project they have been awarded. I most strongly recommend Harbor Services, Inc. for any project where quality, safety, and speed are required. They seem to have the right combination of in house staff, subcontractors and hospital construction experience. They have been accommodating, courteous to staff and patients, and have been a pleasure to work with. We look forward to future projects with Harbor Services, Inc. and greatly appreciate their cooperative, professional, and knowledgeable staff.

It has been a pleasure to work with Harbor Services on the Correct Data Closet project. As a mechanical contractor we work with several different GCs (and have been 8a and SDVOSB company in the past ourselves) and encounter different ways each GC handles the subcontractor and day to day business practices. Harbor has been extremely professional, always responding promptly to requests to ensure the project is successful and pays subcontractors timely. I cannot emphasize enough how much we have enjoyed working with your company and look forward to the next project. It is refreshing to know some companies are still doing it right!
Amy Phifer-Buckles, Secretary/Treasurer, Superior Piping, Fabricators & Erectors, Inc.
